Northline is built for publications that use more than one kind of story. This page links to a live example of each editorial treatment and compares the three feed layouts available as global theme settings.
Content treatments
Feature
Read the feature and notice the caption under the opening image, the five-column table halfway through the piece, the pull quote in the section on labour, and the author box, edition tags and related reading that close it out. This is the treatment with every part of the system in play.
Essay
Read the essay and notice what is missing on purpose: no caption, no table, no gallery. Just the standfirst, the prose and one in-text link styled as a button. Essay is the default Northline article, so this is what a post looks like with no treatment tag at all.
Case Study
Read the case study and notice the metadata block under the opening image, with format, discipline, date and author before a word of the story, then the italic disclaimer, the pull quote, the four-image gallery and the one-page decision guide as a list. Structure stays visible from top to bottom.
Field Note
Read the field note and notice how little there is: an "Observation, logged" line instead of a standfirst, one subheading, one checklist and a two-minute read time. The treatment is built so a short piece looks finished rather than thin.
Visual Story
Read the visual story and notice the captioned hero, the "Begin the story" marker that leads into the narrative, the six-image sequence in the section on quiet as infrastructure and the pull quote. The words are there, but the images set the pace.
Feed layouts
The article feed can be set to Classic, Grid, or List in Ghost Admin. This is a global setting: a publication uses one selected layout at a time.
Classic
A balanced three-column feed with consistent landscape images and a calm, familiar reading rhythm. Articles without a featured image remain clean, text-led cards.
Grid
An editorial grid that preserves the original proportions of featured images, creating a more varied and expressive vertical rhythm. Best suited to visually diverse publications.
List
A spacious, image-led sequence of alternating article rows. Large photography and prominent typography give every story room to make an individual impression.
